ROUTE OF THE CASTLES IN ARAGON: ALCAÑIZ

It belongs to the Bajo Aragon area, 160 km. from Teruel. The castle-convent where the Calatrava order settled dominated the town from its high position. Almost all the styles have left a trace, from Romanesque to Baroque. It was a kind of towered fortress with trapezoid plan, but it was modificated in the 18th century. Nowadays it has been restored and made into a Parador Nacional (the Paradores Nacionales are state-run tourist hotels in monumental, Historic-Artistic buildings). Through the entrance arch we get to an esplanade in front of the 18th century Baroque palace. In the north wing of the fortress are the chapel and the keep. In the north-west corner, Lanuza tower. The chapel is the main Romanesque part and it was the first parish in Alcañiz. To the south of the chapel we find the cloister, of small size. Both the chapel and the cloister are from the 13th century. The keep is Gothic, from the 14th century and has four floors. The lower one serves as porch for the chapel and conserves beautiful Francogothic mural paintings.

Guided visits: from 9,30 to 13,30 and from 16 to 18. Closed on Mondays and Tuesdays.
