ROUTE OF THE CASTLES IN ARAGON: LA ALJAFERIA DE ZARAGOZA

Castle aljaferia in zaragoza

ADMISSION TIMES: From 10 to 14 and from 16 to 20. Closed on Mondays. Holidays: from 10 to 14.

This castle-palace, declared National Monument, was built in the 11th C. as a holiday residence for the Muslim kings of taifas (small Muslim kingdoms), the Banu Hud family. Built by the Muslims in the 11th century, it became the residence of the Christian monarchs after Alfonso I the Fighter's conquest of Zaragoza. The Catholic Monarchs reformed it in 1492. In 1593 Felipe II transformed it into military quarters. From 1947, and mainly in the last years, a laborious restoration process is being done, so that the castle can gain back all its splendour. Nowadays it is the seat of Aragon's Regional Assembly. After crossing the walls, surrounded by a deep moat, we enter the palace through a horseshoe arch. San Martín courtyard gives access to the Gothic-Mudejar church from the 14th C.

In the far end we can see the Troubadour's Tower, the castle's keep, finished in the 15th C. The Muslim palace had the patio of Santa Isabel as its centre, surrounded by arcades and buildings decorated with plasterwork: the octagonal oratory stands out. The entrance to the palace of the Catholic Monarchs is through a solemn staircase. The throne's lounge and the four attached rooms are remarkable, with a magnificent Gothic-Mudejar coffered ceiling of carved and decorated wood.
