ROUTE OF THE MONASTERIES IN ARAGON : THE MONASTERIES IN HUESCA.

The Collegiate Church of Santa María de Alquézar.

Permanent guided tours for both the Collegiate church and the Museum are available.

The town makes us go back to the Middle Ages, with its narrow paved streets. The Collegiate church (National Monument) has an Islamic origin and rises over a rough hill. It was a Benedictine monastery and its origins date back to the 11th century. From those times are the watch tower, part of the walls, the highest tower and some fragments of the Romanesque church that make up the 14th century cloister. The capitals, following San Juan de la Peña school (12th century) are remarkable.

In the 14th century, the architect Juan de Segura built the enormous Collegiate church of Santa María, made up of a nave and a polygonal apse, with ribbed vaulting. Outstanding are as well the main altarpiece and a Romanesque Christ from the 13th century, considered a unique work. From the cloister we get to the Sacred Art Museum, with works from the 12th to the 15th centuries.

From there you can make excursions on foot following the course the river Vero. There are many cave paintings in this area, most of them from the Bronze Age.

Alquézar is the centre of Sierra de Guara area, recently declared Natural Park and given the name of Park of the Sierra and Canyons of Guara.
