ROUTE OF THE MONASTERIES IN ARAGON: THE MONASTERIES IN ZARAGOZA.

Piedra Monastery.

Admission times: 9,00 to 20,00.

Monasterio de Piedra. Zaragoza

118 km. from Zaragoza, in the direction of Madrid. In Calatayud take the turn-off to Nuévalos (road C-202). Along the two kilometres that separate Nuévalos from the monastery we find a lot of hostels and restaurants. The monastery was declared National Monument.

Piedra monastery is located in one of Aragón’s most attractive spots, in the Iberian Massif. Here the river Piedra flows and its uneven course forms impressive waterfalls. The luxuriant vegetation of the area contrasts with the surrounding sober landscape. It was declared Picturesque Spot in 1945.

The monastery was founded in 1195 by Cistercian monks and it was abandoned in 1835 after Mendizábal’s Desamortización (sale of Church lands and properties). It was later adquired by the Muntadas family. They transformed part of the monastery’s buildings into a hotel and arranged the natural surroundings creating a park suitable for tourist visits.

The monastic buildings were erected in three phases: the firstone (13th century) in primitive Gothic style; the Gothic-Renaissance (16th century) and the Classical-Baroque (17th-18th centuries).

The whole monastery was walled and the access was through the keep, a late Medieval work with square plan and battlements.

The church, now in ruins, opened onto the cloister. This was open and had big pointed arches. The monastic rooms also opened onto it: the Gothic refectory, the Cistercian chapter house and the kitchen.

The monumental staircase is remarkable. It is inside a vast nave covered with lierne vaulting. The 17th century cellarium has now become a hotel. The new 18th century abbey palace is also outstanding. It is a Neoclassical building next to the old one, where we find reused Romanesque columns.

Do not miss the natural park surrounding the monastery: a series of waterfalls, caves and lakes among vast forest-covered land. It is a good place to enjoy a day out, breathing fresh air and enjoying Nature.

A trout fish-farm and the Health’s Fountain, advisable for digestive trouble, complete the ensemble.
