The ROMANESQUE ART IN ARAGON: HUESCA Y SOMONTANO.

Alquézar.

Near Barbastro we find one of the best monumental ensembles in Aragón, built around a rock where the Castle and the Collegiate Church stand.

The Collegiate Church, consecrated in the 11th C., keeps only part of the original structure. The old Romanesque porch was used to build the current cloister, where some interesting carved capitals are conserved.

The castle (11th C.) conserves part of the walls, the watch-tower, part of a tower and rests of the church of Santa María Magdalena.

There is a guide service in the mornings and afternoons.

Villanueva de Sijena.

Near Sariñena, in the direction of Fraga, on the banks of the river Alcanadre. It has been declared Monument of Cultural Interest.

The Royal Monastery of Santa María (12th C.) was one of the richest and most influential in the Middle Ages. Its style is a very developed Romanesque. Its spectacular doorway has 14 archivolts. It conserves the structure of the Chapter house, formerly decorated with the most beautiful frescoes of the Late Romanesque. Part of this mural paintings are exhibited in the Art Museum of Cataluña, in Barcelona.

VISITORS: Guide service during the summer. The rest of the year, the key is available in the convent.

Other interesting places:

Chalamera. From Sariñena to Jaca. Church of Santa María (end of the 12th C.).

Tamarite de Litera. From Monzón, take road C-138. Santa María La Mayor (with a Gothic dome) and Hermitage of San Miguel. Both are from the 12th C.

HUESCA:

Among the many works of art in the city, the beauty of one of the oldest churches in Spain stands out. It has been declared Monument of Cultural Interest.

San Pedro el Viejo. It was built in the 12th century, but its origin is older. From the Romanesque period, the temple conserves its beautiful doorway decorated with the crismón (monogram of Christ formed by the Greek letters X and P, the first two letters of the Greek word for Christ) and its splendid cloister with carved capitals attributed to the master of San Juan de la Peña. On the walls there are numerous tombs from the 12th to the 14th centuries. Next to the cloister, the Chapel of San Bartolomé keeps the sepulchres of Ramiro II el Monje (the Monk) and Alfonso I el Batallador (the Fighter), kings of Aragón.

Other Romanesque works in Huesca are the Cathedral’s Cloister, built before the rest of the buiding and which conserves several sepulchres and a beautiful low-relief from the 13th C.; and the church of San Miguel or de las Miguelas, a work from the 12th C., restored later.

alquezar

Loarre.

Turn-off from Ayerbe. Loarre is the most important Romanesque civil building in Spain. It has been declared Monument of Cultural Interest.

Loarre Castle (11th-12th C.). This fortress that defended the border line of the Realm of Aragón was a Royal Palace and a Monastery afterwards.

The castle is walled and has two access doors. The façade, with a round arch door, represents a relief with the figure of Christ inside an almond-shaped nimbus surrounded by the four evangelists. In the interior, the church of Santa María, with an influence from Jaca, shows a great decorative variety in its capitals. Under the church there is a crypt covered by a barrel vault.

Visitors are admitted during the whole year. Guide service available.
